Papa Joe’s Fishing Chair
Papa Joe’s Fishing Chair is a functional chair inspired by my grandfather, a lifelong tuna fisherman whose work on the water shaped both the materials and construction of the piece. Aside from the wood, all components used in the chair—rope, hardware, and accessories—came directly from his fishing gear and tools. The chair translates his fishing legacy into a utilitarian object grounded in durability, reuse, and lived experience.
Project Overview
Papa Joe’s Fishing Chair is a wood-framed chair constructed entirely using traditional wood joinery and wooden dowels, with no metal fasteners in the primary structure. The angled frame distributes weight structurally, while the woven seat references maritime rigging techniques used in commercial fishing. The design emphasizes longevity, material honesty, and functional craftsmanship.
